Dr Stephen Van Heyst is a Canadian-trained specialist anaesthetist providing high-quality, individualised care through Wide Bay Anaesthesia Specialists in Bundaberg. He holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of British Columbia (2017) and completed his specialist anaesthetic training at the University of Alberta, earning Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) in 2023.
During his time at one of Canada’s highest-acuity tertiary hospitals, Dr Van Heyst gained extensive experience across a wide range of surgical subspecialties. He developed particular expertise in managing patients with complex physiology and diverse anaesthetic needs.
In 2023, Dr Van Heyst relocated to Australia in pursuit of new professional opportunities and a sunnier climate. He has since completed the requirements for Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA), awarded in January 2025.
Based at Bundaberg Hospital since May 2023, Dr Van Heyst combines clinical care with medical education. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland and is passionate about training the next generation of anaesthetists. He is committed to delivering safe, tailored anaesthesia and supporting patients through every stage of their surgical journey.
